Bodybuilding Product Review - PowerBlockŪ Dumbbell Set Review

Friday November 14, 2008
PowerBlock Dumbbell SetThose who know me are aware of the fact that I am not a big fan of home gym units. In my opinion, home gym machines do not provide you with the fast results that free weights can provide you with. Why? I have two reasons to base my opinion on:

  • Lack of growth stimulation offered by machines: Because the body was designed to operate in a three-dimensional universe, not a two-dimensional one, by restricting your body to a two-dimensional universe, as you do when using a machine, not enough neuromuscular stimulation is provided to elicit growth. In addition, stabilizer muscles and other auxiliary muscles do not get activated. Therefore while you may be able to bench press 200-lbs when using a chest press machine, you may be able to only lift half of that in a free weight environment.

  • High price and space issues of home gym units: Home gym units are usually very expensive and take a lot of space. In addition, most require a significant amount of setup.

As many of you already know, one of my favorite training tools are dumbbells. If you want to set up a home gym, my recommendation will always be to start up with a good and safe set of adjustable dumbbells. If you have the money and space for it, then my second recommendation would be a sturdy adjustable bench. With these limited pieces of equipment you can exercise all of the muscles in the body. (Note: For more information on this subject, please refer to my articles on Home Gym Equipment and Home Gym Equipment Training Routines).

However, one problem that I find with conventional adjustable dumbbells is the fact that it takes a long time to change their weight. In addition to that, you also need a place to keep the plates that you are not using stored away. For a person with a limited amount of space and who would like to quickly change the resistance, such a solution is not optimal.

In my latest Bodybuilding Product Review, I take a look at the PowerBlockŪ Dumbbell Set and talk about how PowerBlocks may be a good dumbbell solution for your home gym needs.
