Bodybuilding Exercise of the Week: How to Perform Barbell Squats to Target the Quadriceps

Monday December 1, 2008
Barbell Squats; Photo Credit: Lina Rivera (c)2008This month I will discuss several bodybuilding exercises that target the quadriceps muscles (the muscles on the front side of the legs). The first bodybuilding exercise that I will cover is the Barbell Squats.

The squat is the king of lower body exercises. A properly executed squat is not only safe (opposed to what some people claim) but also involves all lower body muscles in addition to upper body ones as well. In order to have well developed legs, Barbell Squats are a must!

In this week's Bodybuilding Exercise Description you will learn how to perform the Barbell Squats properly so that you can place maximum emphasis on the Quadriceps while protecting yourself from common injuries caused by improper form.

Rule Changes Applicable to all Contestants:
  • NPC Membership Card increases to $85.00.
  • National Qualification valid for only one year as opposed to two.
Rule Changes Applicable to Figure/Fitness Contestants:
  • The One Piece Suit Round is eliminated.
  • Height Classes for Figure remain the same.
Rule Changes Applicable to All Female Contestants:
  • A new Bikini Division was created. Height classes are the same as for Figure.
  • No more Crossover Qualifications allowed. You are only qualified to compete in the division that you qualified under. So if you qualified for Nationals through the Figure Division, then that is only division that you can compete in at the Nationals.

Bodybuilding FAQ - Can I Use Amino Acid Tablets Instead of Protein Powders?

Wednesday November 26, 2008
Technically, a complete amino acid formula provides the same protein that you can find in a protein powder. Remember that all proteins are made up from amino acids. However, you would need to ingest a very large amount of these tablets in order to get the same amount of protein that a protein powder can offer.

Most amino acid formulas on the market carry 1000 mg of aminos per tablet, which equals 1 gram of protein per tablet. Therefore, in order to get 30 grams of protein you would need to ingest 30 amino acid tablets.

In my opinion, if you don't have the time to prepare a protein shake, then I suggest trying an RTD (Ready-to-Drink) product, as otherwise, you will not be getting the protein that you need in between meals.
