Dave Draper’s latest book, Iron On My Mind, is a compilation of Dave’s best weekly newsletter articles. Each chapter provides a different article preceded by an inspirational picture of the man himself.

What This Book Is Not About

Now, if you are looking for a logically arranged book that will detail you in a specific order what your training, nutrition, and supplementation should look like, then the book for you is Dave’s Brother Iron, Sister Steel, if you are a bodybuilder, or Dave’s Body Revival: Weight Loss Straight Talk if you are looking to lose some weight. What this book provides you however is a collection of Dave’s most revealing 62 columns, which offer a collection of thoughts on anything related to bodybuilding and fitness; thoughts that are a result of his over 40 years of practical experience in the subject. In Dave’s own words: “Each chapter is a trip of its own. And throughout the book what I call blasts, bombardments of info, energy, caution and reprimand, are periodically inserted to affirm your purpose, aright your direction and challenge your performance. There is no theme, the articles follow no order. They can be ingested randomly when the spirit moves you, like a shot of wonder protein before a workout. Sip or slug, I hope they satisfy and you never grow full”.

What You WIll Learn

While this is by no means your conventional bodybuilding or fitness book, the wisdom and inspiration that you will gain from it are enormous. What I love about Dave’s writing style is the straight, but humorous, eloquent and poetic manner in which he delivers the information. Dave “calls them as he sees them”, so at times you may feel like he just beat you with a rolled up newspaper, but you only get such treatment when it is well deserved. When you read any of these columns, not only will you gain some new insight, or perhaps just a new perspective on something that you already knew, but also feel energized and inspired to hit the gym and do what must be done. Dave speaks from the heart and shares with you knowledge that otherwise may take you 15 or even 20 years of experimentation to find out. For instance, in this book Dave shares the secret on getting super lean, when is the best time to undertake such an endeavor, and even when to enter (or not) a bodybuilding contest.
Dave also shares his knowledge on bulking up for the bodybuilder or trimming down for anyone who is overweight. Some guidelines are offered as far as to how much time needs to be spent in the gym for each particular goal in some of the chapters. In addition, there are plenty of inspirational columns that discuss the reasons why you should be going to workout day in and day out and also why you should keep up with your diet program as well. For the more hardcore bodybuilders out there, the columns where Dave describes his early morning training at the Dungeon are inspiring, invaluable and full of bits and pieces that we can identify with. Needless to say, for the Dave Draper fan, this book is a must have.

Conclusion

There is something for everyone in this book; from the recreational lifter that goes to the gym to stay fit and keep the extra baggage at bay, to the person fighting the battle of the bulge and finally to the hardcore bodybuilder like myself who steps on a stage every year. Iron On My Mind will inspire, instruct, humor, prompt you to think, and call you to take the necessary action to stay in shape or further improve the shape that you already have.
