Prevent Immune System Depression By Following a Proper Bodybuilding Diet

Saturday August 19, 2006
In order to achieve bodybuilding results, bodybuilders push their bodies to the limit day in and day out at the gym. However, too much of a good thing could lead to overtraining, in which case the body would then be unable to recover and grow from the training sessions. As a result, strength decreases, fatigue increases, anabolic hormone production (such as testosterone and GH) go down, cortisol increases (the ugly adrenal stress hormone that starts causing muscle wasting and fat deposition), and finally the immune system function gets depressed, which can lead to a nasty cold or a flu that will take you out of the gym for a while.

Dr. Michael Gleeson, Professor of Exercise Biochemistry at the University of Loughborough 's School of Sport and Exercise Sciences, advises on the important role that diet plays in preventing immune system depression in his latest research article (Nutrition Reviews, 64: 119-131, 2006).

Dr. Gleeson points out that in order to maintain immune function through periods of hard training athletes should:
  1. Eat a well-balanced diet with adequate calories to support the activity, sufficient carbohydrates and proteins, as well as vitamins and minerals.

  2. Have carbohydrates during prolonged strenuous exercise in order to diminish rises in stress hormones like cortisol and also limit the degree of exercise-induced immune depression.

  3. Use antioxidant vitamin supplementation as recent research suggests that using vitamins such as A, C, and E may also reduce exercise stress and impairment of immune system function.
So in a nutshell, if you want to remain healthy as you train hard in order to build yourself up, you have to remember that diet and supplementation (along with rest and recovery) go hand in hand with your training program. Also, a properly designed periodized training program will be of utmost importance as well in preventing your body from crossing the overtraining and immune system depression line.
