Achieving bodybuilding success has a different meaning for every person. For some bodybuilders success is measured by their ability to win bodybuilding competitions, while for others, bodybuilding success is simply losing a couple of inches off the waist, firming up the muscles and feeling more energetic and positive about life. My personal definition of bodybuilding success, for instance, is to achieve the most symmetrical, defined and balanced physique that I can while building and maintaining a high degree of muscle mass that looks good (which is a matter of personal opinion) on my 5'4" frame.

The Magic Pill or Supplement Stack

Regardless of what your definition of bodybuilding success is, which may change as you move along on your bodybuilding journey, a common misconception amongst those in the beginning bodybuilding stages is the belief that all one has to do is take the right "magic pill", or bodybuilding supplements, and the body of your dreams will be created in record time. After 18 years of trying everything out there and being extremely involved in the industry, I can tell you that no matter what unscrupulous advertisers claim on their magazines or cleverly worded TV ads, getting that nice set of abs and achieving a sculpted body that looks like a fine work of art will not happen overnight. And not only will it not happen overnight, but it will also take way more work than advertised.

The Secret To Bodybuilding Success

The secret to achieving bodybuilding success is a combination of factors:
  1. First, set a bodybuilding goal that is both clear, realistic and measurable. (For more information on goal setting, please take a look at my article on The Power of Goal Setting.)

  2. Once you have set goals, then you need to consistently execute your bodybuilding routines and diet as you ensure that you get enough rest and recovery. This will require certain lifestyle changes as you will need to allocate a regular times to train on a weekly basis as well as extra planning and preparation so that you can prepare and carry all of the meals required of a bodybuilding diet with you. Having the the mindset of a successful bodybuilder is also important as this will enable you to keep the bodybuilding lifestyle regardless of any challenges that present themselves.

  3. When you have a consistent bodybuilding schedule that has you training hard and are getting all your meals in consistently, then you add basic bodybuilding supplements to your diet in order to ward off any nutritional deficiencies that may hold you back from progressing.

  4. Only once you become more advanced, you have mastered getting your bodybuilding training, nutrition, rest, and basic supplementation regardless of the daily challenges that life throws at you, then you can assess your bodybuilding program and based on your goals, see if there are any performance enhancing supplements that you can add to your supplement regimen (such as creatine and glutamine) in order to maximize your results.

Believe me when I tell you, I have seen people get on steroids in search for a shortcut to a Herculean image and yet they only achieve marginal results because they have not taken care of the bodybuilding basics.

This just proves that not even steroids are the magic bullet that some people claim them to be. At the end of the day, bodybuilding success is only achieved through hard work in the form of consistent and intelligent training, the right bodybuilding diet (along with basic bodybuilding supplementation) for the goal you want, and rest/recovery.
